John Magnuson at the 331 Club

John Magnuson (and Friends) at the 331 Club — Minneapolis

John Magnuson delivered an intimate, low-key set at the 331 Club—one of those nights where the room, the music, and the moment all lined up naturally. It wasn’t loud, it wasn’t crowded, and it didn’t need to be.

Magnuson is no stranger to Minneapolis stages. In the mid-to-late ’90s, he fronted The Carpetbaggers, writing and singing many of the band’s songs. Having shared the stage with artists like Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, and the Gear Daddies, The Carpetbaggers notably toured several times with Son Volt. Those experiences showed in the ease of the performance.

The music was thoughtful and well played, carried by musicians who know when to step forward and when to let a song breathe. The 331’s bar stayed dim, the street noise faded away, and it was easy to walk in, grab a seat, and simply listen.

Sometimes that’s all a show needs to be—good songs, good players, and a room that lets it happen.
