Maygen & The Birdwatcher at New Band Night — First Avenue

Maygen & The Birdwatcher felt right at home at New Band Night at First Avenue, delivering a set that was warm, confident, and easy to sink into. Great band, great songs, great atmosphere—the kind of night where everything just works.

At the core of the group are singer-songwriters Maygen Lacey and Noah Neumann, who started as a duo before realizing their sound wanted to stretch out and breathe. That expansion shows. What’s on stage now is a tight, thoughtful collective that blends Americana, folk, country, and bluegrass without sounding stuck in any one lane.

The musicianship stood out immediately. Nik Pellinen moved effortlessly between banjo, lap steel, and electric guitar, while Jesse Moravec’s mandolin and harmonies added lift and texture. Evin Haukos brought a soaring fiddle presence, backed by a solid rhythmic foundation from Joe Barron on bass and Peter Anderson on drums and percussion. It all felt cohesive—never busy, never overdone.

The room was locked in. First Avenue gave them a great stage, and the band filled it with a sound that felt both grounded and expansive. There’s a polish here, but it doesn’t come at the expense of heart.

With their upcoming record The Americana Dream arriving later this year, Maygen & The Birdwatcher look like a band comfortably stepping into their next chapter—expanding their sound while making it feel completely effortless.
