Minnesota Villain Arts Tattoo Convention Recap
Villain Arts Tattoo Convention
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis | January 9–11
This weekend the Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Festival, produced by Villain Arts, returned to the Hyatt Regency Minneapolisand once again filled the ballroom with ink, art, and a nonstop flow of people looking to add something permanent to their collection.
I spent time at the show on both Friday and Saturday, and the energy in the room was incredible from the moment the doors opened. Hundreds of tattoo artists from around the country — and around the world — set up elaborate booths showcasing their flash art, portfolios, and unique tattoo styles. Walking the floor felt like stepping through a living gallery where every few feet a completely different artistic style was on display.
What really stands out at an event like this is the variety. Some booths looked like miniature art galleries covered in hand-painted flash sheets and prints, while others felt like full production tattoo studios temporarily built inside the convention hall. Artists worked nonstop all weekend, and by the end of the show thousands of tattoos will have been created right there on the convention floor.
Beyond the tattooing itself, the festival delivered plenty of entertainment. Throughout the weekend there were live performances and sideshow-style acts, including appearances by performers like the Cenobyte Suspension Crew, Dr. Blasphemy, and other stage entertainers that added to the carnival-like atmosphere of the convention.
The crowds reflected just how popular tattoo culture has become. The aisles were packed with collectors, first-timers looking for their first piece, and plenty of people who were just there to experience the art and creativity of the scene. Everywhere you looked there were fresh tattoos being wrapped up, friends comparing new ink, and artists collaborating with clients on the next idea.
If you haven’t made it down yet, there’s still time. The final day of the show runs today from 11am–8pm, so if you’re in the Minneapolis area and even remotely interested in tattoo culture, it’s worth stopping by to see it for yourself.
